(11:39:39 PM) Lurker: so, Glenalth, how much wall do you think we could build before next year if we got some work days set up?
(11:39:57 PM) Glenalth: Probably as much as you wanted to.
(11:40:20 PM) Lurker: in my rough sketches of how it might be cool to set up a stronghold stuff, I imagined a square-ish wall section with a structure in the middle
(11:40:42 PM) Lurker: I was bored so I designed some stuff to replicate cauldrons of boiling oil
(11:40:51 PM) Lurker: basically boxes that you turn over and have fireballs in them
(11:41:05 PM) Lurker: but made out of wood and meant to work like a mini-siege engine
(11:41:22 PM) Glenalth: Fill them with acid bolts instead :)
(11:41:31 PM) Lurker: either works, really
(11:41:39 PM) Lurker: if you get caught in that downfall, you're dead
(11:42:21 PM) Lurker: 3 acid bolts breaks a shield, and you'd prolly get hit by 6 or 7 of em if you got hit
(11:42:22 PM) Glenalth: One has people that might be immune to it though.
(11:42:36 PM) Lurker: ooh, that's right
(11:42:59 PM) Glenalth: Could mix it up I suppose.
(11:43:02 PM) Lurker: could put a mix
(11:43:08 PM) Glenalth: Just put a random type of ball in there.
(11:43:14 PM) Lurker: yeah
(11:43:23 PM) Lurker: entangle bolts and petrifys would be funny
(11:43:24 PM) Glenalth: Have a wizard charging balls and putting them in one at a time to simulate reloading or whatever.
(11:43:37 PM) Lurker: yeah, maybe
(11:43:45 PM) Lurker: they'd probably all start loaded though
(11:43:54 PM) Lurker: was gonna put them on the roof of the inner structure
(11:43:55 PM) Glenalth: Probably not mixed balls in a single load.
(11:44:00 PM) Lurker: next to some archer walls
(11:44:32 PM) Glenalth: I downloaded a copy of SketchUp to see if that would help.
(11:44:35 PM) Lurker: when I can scan in some sketches, I'll have some design ideas to post on the site
(11:44:44 PM) Lurker: sketchup is fun
(11:44:51 PM) Lurker: used it before.. it's... interestig
(11:44:59 PM) Lurker: you can definitely model buildings with it
(11:45:43 PM) Lurker: my designs for the gatehouse had it being an octagon with a 10x10 area in the middle
(11:45:54 PM) Lurker: to support the roof, we could run wooden beams through the walls
(11:46:12 PM) Lurker: basically huge ass logs
(11:46:44 PM) LordMarcil: having fun lurker
(11:46:49 PM) Lurker: yeah, actually
(11:47:12 PM) Lurker: make sure you are warmed up for the tourney tomorrow, Marcil
(11:47:16 PM) LordMarcil: I'm going to sleep soon, gotta wake up early tomorrow
(11:47:22 PM) Glenalth: I'll try to talk to my brother about it as well to see how we'll need to do the roof if we want people up there at some point.
(11:47:23 PM) Lurker: good idea
(11:47:30 PM) Lurker: play "Eye of the Tiger" so you get pumped :)
(11:47:37 PM) Lurker: I see
(11:47:47 PM) Lurker: I will talk to my uncle about construction materials
(11:47:49 PM) Glenalth: Eye of the Tiger should make you feel relaxed, not pumped.
(11:47:56 PM) Lurker: ?
(11:48:04 PM) Glenalth: Make sure you find out about concrete blocks and cinder blocks.
(11:48:10 PM) Lurker: yeah
(11:48:21 PM) Glenalth: Cinder we can probably use for the walls.
(11:48:27 PM) Lurker: yeah
(11:48:33 PM) Glenalth: Stick to concrete for the main structure.
(11:48:41 PM) Lurker: but we'd need something sturdier for stand-on-able structures
(11:48:43 PM) Lurker: yeah
(11:49:05 PM) Glenalth: Concrete block plus rebar and poured concrete is as good as we're likely to get for the "arena/gatehouse".
(11:49:17 PM) Glenalth: The ceiling is the part I do not know about.
(11:50:08 PM) Glenalth: If we have to we can start with a sod roof and replace that later on :)
(11:50:43 PM) Lurker: right
(11:51:02 PM) Glenalth: Was also thinking that the ladders to the roof could be inside the gatehouse to make it a bit safer.
(11:51:28 PM) Glenalth: Closing hatch up top to keep people out and prevent fighting on the ladders.
(11:52:30 PM) LordMarcil: we need to set up spring loaded traps
(11:52:44 PM) Lurker: yeah
(11:52:48 PM) Glenalth: Oh, and we'll need mortar for the concrete blocks. I'm thinking it's just concrete, but I don't really know.
(11:53:00 PM) Lurker: I would really just say that you can't fight on the ladders, and can't be killed on the ladders
(11:53:08 PM) Glenalth: Retractable ladders even...
(11:53:14 PM) Lurker: maybe
(11:53:24 PM) Glenalth: Things happen in the heat of the moment. Rather just make it impossible.
(11:53:28 PM) LordMarcil: I know how to make a trap with crossbow bolts or arrows
(11:53:50 PM) Lurker: I designed a trebuchet today. It doesn't mean that I can make one
(11:54:07 PM) Glenalth: Don't forget about the murder holes.
(11:54:19 PM) Lurker: yeah
(11:54:21 PM) LordMarcil: but only a one shot (can be multiple) wall trap
(11:54:24 PM) Glenalth: 3" wide on the outside probably.
(11:54:27 PM) Morgant: a few friends & I made a moderate sized trebuchet back in high school
(11:54:49 PM) Lurker: was thinking 1'x1' archer holes, and larger ones on the main structure that people could maybe fit through
(11:54:59 PM) Lurker: that way it would be really important to guard the walls
(11:55:13 PM) Lurker: I will have to make a trebuchet for AP Physics
(11:55:18 PM) Glenalth: I'm thinking of a few holes down low against the wall. Small opening door inside even.
(11:55:59 PM) Glenalth: At crotch level...
(11:56:12 PM) LordMarcil: springloaded wall traps that if you step on the string conected to the ground or whatever, the spring activates and you get shot with a bunch of arrows (could be just 1) but they wouldn't expect it unless they knew about it or saw it
(11:56:40 PM) Glenalth: Why use a one shot trap when you could just have a person shooting?
(11:57:15 PM) LordMarcil: a string barried in the sand, you step on it, you get shot, or, you can have a motion censor trap
(11:57:26 PM) LordMarcil: traps can't die
(11:57:38 PM) Lurker: right
(11:57:41 PM) Glenalth: They do as soon as they go off once!
(11:57:42 PM) Lurker: but they also only shoot once
(11:57:46 PM) Lurker: and have an exact aim
(11:57:48 PM) Lurker: yeah
(11:58:04 PM) Glenalth: It would probably be a cool thing behind the doors though.
(11:58:27 PM) Lurker: could set up the main gate so that if it gets busted open, spellballs fall on the enemy
(11:58:38 PM) LordMarcil: have a bunch lined up through a corridor or something....make it so it really like..."I know something bad is going to happen"...and have different traps set up in some parts
(11:58:50 PM) Lurker: probably won't really have corridors
(11:58:57 PM) Glenalth: Just the gate house.
(11:59:16 PM) Glenalth: A pair of arrow slits on the back wall would be brutal for attackers forcing their way through.
(11:59:19 PM) Lurker: might be fun to have some tunnels under the platforms by the walls, but it's probably too much effort and dangerous
(11:59:59 PM) Glenalth: It would be great to have a separate keep as well.
(12:00:11 AM) Lurker: ?
(12:00:21 AM) Lurker: like exterior, or an internal structure within the walls?
(12:00:29 AM) Glenalth: Keep inside the wall.
(12:00:43 AM) Glenalth: Could be my "tent" :)
(12:00:44 AM) LordMarcil: what happens if you are shooting through a slot in a wall and a guy shoves his polearm through the gap and kills you, or someone hits the arrow while your aiming and the knock hits you in the eye
(12:01:07 AM) Glenalth: You don't stand that close to an arrow slit.
(12:01:23 AM) LordMarcil: then you end up hitting the wall instead
(12:01:30 AM) Glenalth: What are you talking about?
(12:01:41 AM) LordMarcil: how big is the arrow slit
(12:01:57 AM) Glenalth: However big we make them.
(12:02:24 AM) Lurker: and the people won't be standing that close from the outside
(12:02:28 AM) LordMarcil: make it big enough to where polearms can't stab over the walls
(12:02:29 AM) Lurker: the archers can stand as close as they want
(12:02:34 AM) Lurker: duh
(12:02:36 AM) LordMarcil: like at clan
(12:02:42 AM) Lurker: these are semi-real-sized walls
(12:02:49 AM) Lurker: probably 8 to 10 feet high
(12:03:01 AM) Glenalth: That's a bit much.
(12:03:03 AM) LordMarcil: thats good...with ladders to upper levels where the archer slot is
(12:03:04 AM) Lurker: it would take a lot more to vault or stab over
(12:03:07 AM) Glenalth: They need to be somewhat low to allow for fighting.
(12:03:07 AM) Lurker: maybe 6 to 8
(12:03:31 AM) LordMarcil: archer towers
(12:03:34 AM) Lurker: I don't think people on the outside should be able to hit the defenders easily
(12:03:49 AM) LordMarcil: thats the point of a caslte righ?
(12:03:55 AM) LordMarcil: right*
(12:04:05 AM) LordMarcil: or is it just a keep
(12:04:07 AM) Lurker: if we had them 6' high at the low points and 8' high on top of the crinolations, it'd probably be perfect
(12:04:13 AM) Lurker: it's a wall, with a keep in the middle
(12:04:23 AM) Glenalth: A bit of height and a raise in the back for some height advantage from defending poles. Shouldn't be much short weapon fighting at the walls.
(12:04:27 AM) LordMarcil: and a moat?
(12:04:33 AM) LordMarcil: and a bridge
(12:04:41 AM) Lurker: no moat or bridge
(12:04:45 AM) LordMarcil: awww
(12:04:49 AM) Lurker: unless we want to build it _in_ the pond
(12:04:50 AM) Glenalth: Depends on how close it is to the pond.
(12:05:16 AM) LordMarcil: dig a trench and fill it with water right before the battles
(12:05:57 AM) Glenalth: Have fun with that.
(12:06:06 AM) LordMarcil: idk, im just trying to come up with ideas
(12:06:08 AM) Lurker: yeah
(12:06:12 AM) Glenalth: Depending on how long ago it rained, the pond could make an interesting backdrop.
(12:06:19 AM) Lurker: probably
(12:06:33 AM) Lurker: if we put the back against the pond, then that would make it easier to defend on rainy days
(12:06:50 AM) LordMarcil: that thing is scary...it has alien dinosaurs living in it
(12:07:11 AM) Glenalth: Yes.
(12:07:29 AM) Glenalth: Would eat too many arrows though.
(12:07:35 AM) LordMarcil: a defense keep, that would be more cool then an offence keep
(12:07:49 AM) Glenalth: What?
(12:07:57 AM) LordMarcil: and spellballs when thrown and deflected
(12:08:13 AM) LordMarcil: offence = Clan
(12:08:28 AM) LordMarcil: there was pretty much no defence
(12:08:44 AM) Glenalth: Because it could be surrounded.
(12:08:44 AM) LordMarcil: just people jumping over walls and such
(12:09:03 AM) Glenalth: Won't be the case here. Climbing over the wall will be a bit more difficult even with help.
(12:09:13 AM) Lurker: yeah
(12:09:22 AM) Lurker: although it might be fun to have siege ladders
(12:09:25 AM) LordMarcil: you should have an auto-battering ram but you have to use people\
(12:09:26 AM) Glenalth: And there won't be a way for archers to shoot you in the back while you are holding the gate.
(12:10:21 AM) Glenalth: Unless they're your own archers...
(12:11:09 AM) Lurker: yeah
(12:11:13 AM) LordMarcil: a ram connected to chains on a metal structure...so people don't screw up thier arms like at clan....and that was very dangerous....what if the door opened and they rammed it all the way through and impailed someone with it
(12:11:23 AM) Lurker: that doesn't happen
(12:11:29 AM) Lurker: besides, we have safer ideas
(12:11:31 AM) Glenalth: It was blunt, so it couldn't impale people.
(12:11:46 AM) Glenalth: The biggest danger was people getting their ankles stuck under the door when it was forced open.
(12:11:51 AM) LordMarcil: it could break the crap out of someones head or chest
(12:12:08 AM) LordMarcil: that too
(12:12:41 AM) LordMarcil: or getting thrown back, or getting knocked out by the swinging door
(12:13:11 AM) LordMarcil: I got hit with that door and man I was out for the rest of the day
(12:13:52 AM) LordMarcil: well since noone is talking, im going to bed
(12:13:52 AM) Glenalth: Being behind that door was the dangerous part.
(12:13:58 AM) LordMarcil: yes
(12:14:14 AM) Glenalth: Because nobody is talking over the course of 120 seconds, you are going to bed?
(12:14:24 AM) Glenalth: Maybe you need to work on your attention span a bit.
(12:14:55 AM) Glenalth: Have a good night.
(12:15:00 AM) LordMarcil: it was very dangerous, but realistic nonetheless
(12:15:06 AM) Glenalth: It was very neat.
(12:15:33 AM) Glenalth: An actual battering ram is very cool. Just think people should be kept away from the back of the door during ramming.
(12:15:35 AM) LordMarcil: with the people being tossed back rom the wall while they were holding against it with their shields
(12:15:53 AM) Glenalth: I know, I was one of the people barricading the door for my team.
(12:15:58 AM) LordMarcil: like from LOTR
(12:16:14 AM) LordMarcil: same thing with the knockback
(12:16:42 AM) LordMarcil: did you get injured
(12:16:55 AM) Glenalth: No, but I saw the potential.
